A heads up to listeners, there will be some explicit language in this program. This show does not censor artists. That said, gather the kids in the room. They just may learn something.
It is not so simple framing Al Rose’s music in terms of simple genres. Singer magazine, in, June 2003 put it this way “Listening to Al Rose is like standing in a huge gallery of abstract art. As you stare up at the paintings entitled, “Egg Me On”, “New Coat Of Paint”, and  “Random Hollow Diesel Train”, you can’t help but wonder, “Am I the only one here who gets, or doesn’t get this?” His music flows like a William Carlos Williams poem with buckets of Americana modernism, and with the lyrical non-sequiturs of a Collage by Chicago artist Tony Fitzpatrick. Al Rose’s latest album is Again the Beginner, which is described as an urgent set of 13 good and true songs, one man’s attempt to come to terms with modern times and that broken feeling everybody’s got in the pit of their stomach. Al is also the proprietor of Kopi Café in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood. You can catch him live on Sundays, at 8:00PM at Montrose Saloon, 2933 West Montrose Ave, in Chicago for his 2nd Damn Sunday of The Fucking Month show.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing my guest in action twice with the band he helped found. Once with the larger-than-life front man, the late great Pat DiNizio at the legendary Lounge Ax back in 1991, and again in 2018 with Marshall Crenshaw. Dennis Diken is the drummer for the Smithereens which will perform for one night only in Chicago on November 2 at City Winery, citywinery.com. This on the release of the band’s new raw and gritty, The Lost album.
